Event: After death of a 35-year-old engineer on the way to Charak Hospital from Shree Ratnahari Memorial Hospital (where he was admitted for few days), agitated relatives had pad-locked the hospital claiming the delay in referral of the patient.

Hospital: Hetauda Hospital, Hetauda, Nepal

Victims: None

Type of violence: Non-violent (Picketing)

Event: A 12-year-old boy was brought to Hetauda hospital ER following electrocution during fishing. He was soon declared dead in the hospital and post-mortem was delayed awaiting for the deceased's father to arrive. Some relatives later claimed that the boy's body was hot and was still conscious until the evening when they called doctors to examine him. Irate relatives of the deceased boy blamed the doctors for declaring him dead when he was alive and his death due to the delayed treatment and picketed the hospital.

Hospital: Birat Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Morang, Nepal

Victims: 1 on-duty doctor and 1 on-duty health assistant in emergency room

Type of violence: Physical

Event: Sons of a 73 year-old elderly woman who was brought to ER following a road traffic accident had attacked doctors and health workers due to delay in the treatment. The victims had sustained injury on head and various parts of the body.

Event: Alleging death due to excessive bleeding due to delay in treatment of a 26-year-old man injured in road accident at Terai Hospital, agitated family members vandalized the hospital by breaking windowpanes and glass door and also a doctor's car window.

Event: After death of a 5-month-old baby, relatives padlocked the hospital claiming that the reason for death was due to delay in the treatment.

Hospital: Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Hospital, Rajbiraj, Nepal

Event: The group which came to the hospital with a patient at around 2:00pm vandalized the hospital saying two doctors did not come to the hospital to check the patient. The irate victim's relatives had also chanted slogans against the hospital.

Hospital: Snakebite Treatment Center Bandipur, Karjanha, Siraha, Nepal

Type of violence: Non-violent (road-block)

Event: After death of a 24-year-old man who was being treated at the center and referred to Janakpur following snakebite, the irate locals and relatives had imposed a road-block along the East-West highway at Bandipur section for 2 hours. The relatives had claimed that the patient died due to delay in referral despite the absence of skilled manpower.

Hospital: Prithivi Chandra Hospital, Ramgram, Nawalparasi, Nepal

Type of violence: Physical

Event: After the death of a 20-year-old man who was brought to the hospital with loss of consciousness (electrocution or snakebite), the clash occurred between the police and the crowd when the agitated locals attempted to vandalize the hospital and manhandle the health personnels. While the hospital had claimed that the patient was dead on arrival, the relatives had claimed that the death occurred due to the delay in treatment at the hospital.

Event: The relative of a patient had slapped the doctor and also used abusive words against the medical personnels in the ER claiming that they hadn't paid attention for the treatment of the patient.

Hospital: Nagarik Community Hospital, Bhaktapur, Nepal

Type of violence: Non-violent (Demonstration)

Event: After the death of a 21-year-old lady with ectopic pregnancy, the relatives staged a demonstration alleging the doctors for overdose of medication and delay in treatment as the cause of death. The tense situation had normalized after the relatives received 2 million rupees compensation from the hospital.

  • The health workers on duty at Malangwa Hospital, Sarlahi were beaten and abused.

  • The doctor working at the hospital and the hospital was vandalized by relatives regarding the treatment of a patient who was initially treated for abdominal pain at Everest Nursing Home in Kathmandu and later died at Bir Hospital.

  • Bir Hospital was attacked after a child who underwent hip surgery died from kidney failure. Relatives of the boy stormed the hospital, and assaulted doctors and nurses on duty. The reason they gave for their action was “sheer negligence on the part of the doctors” who treated him.

  • After the death of a patient during her treatment at Dhulikhel Hospital, her relatives had attacked and vandalized the health institution.
22 September, 2008 (Himal Nursing Home)
  • A doctor from Himal Nursing Home was attacked.
25 October, 2008 (Norvic International Hospital)
  • The relatives had attacked the doctor claiming that there was a delay in treatment of a patient leading to his death. The patient was the principal of Modern Indian Boarding school.
16 November, 2008 (Gorkha Hospital)
  • A doctor from Gorkha hospital and public health officers were attacked.
