Event: After death of two patients (96-year-old lady and 67-year-old man) with severe pneumonia in geriatric ward within a small timeframe of receiving injectable medications (Heparin and Antibiotic), the relatives and crowd hand threatened and thrashed the doctors with the perception that the death was due to the wrong medication.

After the incident, there has been commendable support from PAHS faculties and executives in the strike of juniors. After many attempts, police have finally accepted the complaint.

Victim: On duty doctor in HDU

Type of violence: Physical

Event: At around 11 PM, on duty medical officer was manhandled during the course of management of a patient with stage IV carcinoma lungs.

Victims: Hospital vandalized (The interrogation room next to the gate, the guard's room, the windows of the floor where the administration room is located, and some private cars parked in the parking lot were also vandalized.)

Type of violence: Hospital vandalized

Event: After the death of an ICU admitted17-year-old man in the first post-operative day following appendectomy for acute appendicitis, angry relatives vandalized the hospital claiming negligence of the doctors for delayed surgical intervention and possible organ trafficking. 7 people were arrested.

Event: After death of a neonate in 4 days of life following the vacuum delivery of twin babies, family members picketed the hospital claiming the negligence of doctors and nurses. The family had claimed that the newborn was given overdose of antibiotic.

Event: After death of a 72-year-old man who was brought to the hospital after sustaining injury following fall from the ladder, the relatives staged demonstrations and resorted to vandalism. They had claimed that the patient died due to medication overdose.

Event: The perpetrator entered an argument with the doctors saying that it was the duty of hospital and not patient's relatives to arrange for ambulance. He was on his police uniform and changed his clothes before beating the doctors.

23 May, 2006 (Lumbini Province Hospital, Butwal)

  • After the death of the patient injured in road traffic accident during the treatment, a doctor working at Lumbini Zonal Hospital, Butwal, was attacked by the relatives of the deceased in the Emergency Room. The angry group had also vandalized the hospital. Two dozen other private clinics were also vandalized, and ambulance was set ablaze, alleging that a patient was reportedly killed due to doctors' negligence.
24 May, 2006 (Everest Nursing Home, Kathmandu)
  • After the death of the asthma patient due to unavailability of oxygen cylinder on time, the relatives of the deceased attacked the health workers at the Everest Nursing Home in Kathmandu and vandalized the hospital. Hundreds of local youths, taxi drivers, and Maoist rebels joined family members in vandalizing the facility and clashing with police. Agitated crowd entered hospital premises and vandalized furniture, burnt tyres on the road in front of the nursing home, chanted slogans and demanded action against the doctors responsible. The protesters disbanded only after the hospital took responsibility for Gautam's death and agreed to pay his son a settlement of 250,000 Rupees ($3,400 US).
16 June, 2006 (Province Hospital Janakpur)
  • After the death of the patient during the treatment, relatives attacked the doctor working in the hospital and the hospital in Janakpur Regional Hospital. After the death of a seriously injured patient in the accident during treatment, the medical superintendent working in the hospital and other health-impaired persons were assaulted and the hospital vandalized.
28 August, 2006 (NAMS, Bir Hospital)
  • On the night, relatives of the patient attacked the doctors and health workers who were treating emergency patients at Bir Hospital.
13 September, 2006 (PAHS, Patan Hospital)
  • After death of a 3-year-old girl, relatives had attacked two doctors.
9 October, 2006 (Trishuli Hospital)
  • Infuriated group broke windows and doors of the hospital and also damaged medical equipment and other materials following death of two patients injured in a mini-truck accident.
20 November, 2006 (National Medical College, Birgunj)
  • After the death of a 10-year-old girl with appendicitis, 3 days after the surgery, the irate relatives had shouted slogans and vandalized the hospital. The situation had become tense and regular services at the hospital had come to a halt after the rampaging group began burning tyres at the hospital gate and blocked people’s entry into the hospital. The situation eased after local leaders of political parties and police officials held talks with the hospital management and ensured that it would provide Rs 50,000 as compensation to the deceased’s kin.
